K\u00f6nnten Sie sich bitte vorstellen und uns etwas \u00fcber Ihren medizinischen Hintergrund erz\u00e4hlen?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n Mein Name ist Gudrun Gr\u00f6ppel und ich bin Fach\u00e4rztin f\u00fcr Neurologie mit einer zus\u00e4tzlichen Qualifikation in p\u00e4diatrischer Neurologie. I treat patients of all ages, which is particularly important when it comes to genetically-based epilepsy. These disorders begin early in childhood and affect patients and their families for the rest of their lives. I have also completed a Masters degree in clinical genetics. The basis for this is that genetic therapies represent the future in the treatment of chronic diseases, and we therefore need to understand the mechanisms involved. For several years I have been lecturing neuropaediatrics at the Department of Child and Youth Medicine at the Kepler University Clinic in Linz and also working in parallel at the Department of Neurology at the Kepler University Clinic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n Was machen Sie gerne in Ihrer Freizeit, wenn Sie nicht im medizinischen Bereich t\u00e4tig sind?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n My work with patients, research and teaching, as well as my work on the board of the University Clinic for Children's and Young People's Epilepsy in Linz and in the Austrian Epilepsy Society and the European Association of Neurology, have taken up a great deal of my time. I spent the last few years of my life with my husband in the mountains. <\/em><\/p>\n\n Wie sind Sie dazu gekommen, sich mit genetischen Krankheiten zu besch\u00e4ftigen, insbesondere mit dem MECP2-Duplikationssyndrom?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n Meinen ersten Patienten mit MDS lernte ich vor mehr als 10 Jahren im Epilepsiezentrum der Universit\u00e4tsklinik f\u00fcr Kinder- und Jugendheilkunde in Wien kennen. Der Junge hatte viele Anf\u00e4lle, die auf keine Medikamente ansprachen. We were then able to mildly treat the symptoms with an epilepsy operation. However, I lost contact with my family when I changed my job. In the last few years, we have seen that more and more epilepsy and\/or developmental disorders have a genetic cause. This opens up many new and exciting therapeutic possibilities. The possibility of treating epilepsy and not just the early stages of the disease is no longer entirely utopian.<\/em><\/p>\n\n Was hat Sie dazu bewogen, sich als medizinischer Berater f\u00fcr den Verein \"Lasst uns MDS heilen - DupMECP2\" zu engagieren?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n Es hat mich immer gest\u00f6rt, dass gerade Arzneimittelstudien immer ohne Menschen konzipiert werden, die das Medikament letztlich einnehmen sollen. This is not treatment on the increase. Cooperation with self-help groups and associations is important on both sides. For doctors, it's about better addressing patients' needs, and for patients, it's about realistically implementing medical options and remaining on the front line. <\/em><\/p>\n\n Was sind Ihre Hoffnungen und Ziele f\u00fcr die Zukunft der Erforschung und Behandlung des MECP2-Duplikationssyndroms?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n As the name of the organisation says: \"Lasst uns MDS heilen\".
